Andremas - an old forgotten celebration of love

Many of you might not know this tradition, thought its origins are very hard to find. When I tried to dig the origins I only found the mentions of ancient Greece being the first place to celebrate it. I will share all of my knowledge and traditions about Andremas. Usually, in the night from 29th to 30th November, we celebrate Andremas. Tradition is still popular in Poland, but not that much as when I was a child. However, it's a celebration of love, especially for singles. During this time you can divination when you will be married, with whom and everything related to your love life. Usually for females is Andremas and for males, it was happening during the day of Saint Katarina. Right now they both seem to merge into Andremas.

Why that name? As you probably noticed, Andremas is celebrated during the day of Saint Andrew, but don't feel conflicted - its origins are way older than that. Why during this date? Why this name? Because the original Greek name of Andrew being Andreas has a similar meaning to a husband and male. This is why popular tradition claims that he's the patron of love and marriages. So far I don't know about any other country celebrating it still, but as traditions are very simple I would invite you to try them and share your experience!

Andremas Traditions There are several about which we will talk today, but let's start with a most popular one

Wax divination

You will need: bowl with cold water Melted wax or candle to melt Plastic box to melt the wax in a microwave or small cooking pot (be sure you wouldn't mind it being destroyed because the wax is hard to cleanse) Key with a hole in it Candle Once you will melt the wax, hold the key over the bowl and pour the wax. Once it will stir, take it out and turn off all the lights. Light the candle and try to look into the shadow of your wax figure. What does it tell you? You can also try to check the symbolism to know more.

Running Shoes

That will need more people, so if you want to make Andremas party it would be the perfect game. Everyone takes their left shoe off and places it in the corner of the room. From one corner to the second on the opposite side, you will move your shoes, place one, and on the place where the first one ended next person places theirs. You move them over and over until one of the participants will touch the second corner. The winner will have most of the luck in relationships and will marry first.

3 cups

There is also another form with 4 cups, usually, I am doing the one with 3. Take 3 cups in the same color and hide better them tree leaf, a ring, and a crucifix. The participants will have to choose one of them and depending on what's inside they should be either free in this new year if they choose leaf, marry if they choose a ring, or be very focused on their spiritual side of the cross is choose. Some people add coin for the fourth one, and if it's chosen it means focusing on the wealth.

Apple Divination

Take an apple, and try to make a long spiral as you can while peeling it. The longer it will be, the longer your relationship will hold. Then hold that peel and throw it over your left arm. When you will look at it, try to see a letter. It's the first letter of your future love.

Dream my name

And the Last of the traditions. Write several names on the paper pieces and fold them. Place them under your pillow and in the early morning choose one. It should be your

future lover's name.
