Oracle Cards - Simpler alternative to Tarot?

Updated: Aug 14, 2021

Today we are going to talk about oracle decks and why I named this topic a simpler alternative of Tarot.

Oracle cards,

For this, we would need to define who or what oracle was in the past. Quoting Encyclopedia Britannica "Oracle, (Latin oraculum from orare, “to pray,” or “to speak”), divine communication delivered in response to a petitioner’s request; also, the seat of prophecy itself. Oracles were a branch of divination, but differed from the casual pronouncements of augurs by being associated with a definite person or place. For example, the oracles of Zeus originated at Dodona, Olympia. Those of the Sibyl was in general circulation, but their provenance was unknown."

Oracles had one thing in common - they were communicating with the Gods and bringing their messages in some cryptic way. So the persons receiving the message had to understand it in their own way - it was never explained what exact Gods meant. That is common with the current oracle decks - by pulling a card you receive some sort of message which should help you with your question. Mostly you will get a specific message - but the oracle isn't showing full details about the situation, unlike tarot. You might get single guidance from the deck itself, but it will be hard to see many details in this sort of reading.

Everything depends on the deck you are using too, as some decks are related to specific topics. For example, the Dark mirror deck is connected to the shadow working, so asking it "what I need to change in my life?" Will bring you messages from your shadow self. But if you will ask the same question to the Faery deck(which is connected to the emotions) you will get messages connected more to your emotions and eat you are seeing the world. The angelic deck might for example give you some specifics about the message from angels and Meditation which would be beneficial for you to achieve your changes.

But back to the oracle readings: once you get your reading, you might notice that sometimes you understand on the spot what this message means, while with other decks it's going to be harder for you. Mainly oracle needs you to read the message and meditate on it or think about it. Why? Because you are you. You have your own experience and your own thoughts and decisions. Oracle is supposed to help you, not others. Everyone reading the same text might see s d understand in their own way and this is something that is making us all unique and beautiful. Take your time with your reading. Don't focus just on basic words but on the whole. the message you were given. You will notice that sometimes by reading it two or three times, you will find some other things to focus on.

How to choose your oracle deck?

Here you focus on two things: what exactly do you need from your oracle? You need to know what sort of guidance you are looking for. For example, if you want to look for guidance, the decks with meditations and affirmations might be something for you. If you look for more general ones - try to see what deck is holding inside. You might see the cards, their meanings, etc. It depends on you.

In the second part - you need to feel a connection with your cards. So choose what feels good to you. Don't force yourself into a deck you wouldn't want to use or you don't like. It should be one with you and resonate with you.

How do I divinate with oracle?

First, prepare your deck - as we did with pendulum and other items. You might look at this lesson here: (of course, don't put them in the water!)do also the Meditation part.

Close your eyes, focus on your question and mix the cards. Once you feel ready, spread them into groups or one huge circle around yourself and pick up cards.

Every oracle has a booklet with explanations. Check it there and think about your reading. Most decks are 1-card reading alike. Some might have also more spreads inside the booklet. Depends on the oracle, really.

Once you are more familiar with your oracle, you might go step up - try to mix different oracles or..tarot and oracle together. For example: doing past life readings I'm using oracle to get most of the past life lessons and tarot to learn more about the person and situation during this lifetime.

No one said you can't mix all of it into one reading if you feel like you need it!
